The Kuwait Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) planned to expand Kuwait International Airport to increase capacity from 6 to 20 million passengers per year. Foster and Partners plan called for extensive redevelopment of the existing terminal, construction of a new terminal building connected by a tunnel, extending the existing two runways and the construction of a third.
The extension and refurbishment of the existing terminal building included the installation of a new aluminium cladding system. 3Deling was commissioned to provide detailed drawings of the Ground Floor, Roof and external facades. The new prefabricated panels were required to fit the existing structure necessitating the need for a highly accurate survey.
To fulfil the brief 185 individual scan positions were recorded. Alongside the scan data, targets were installed and controlled with total station measurements to ensure the highest accuracy. The final data was delivered relative to the Kuwait National Coordinate system derived from GPS measurements.
